Summary

To show reefs around Chuuk based on their geomorphology.

Description

This datset shows reefs around Chuuk based on their geomorphology. It was created by the Millennium Coral Reef Mapping Project by the Institute for Marine Remote Sensing - University of South Florida (IMaRS-USF) and the Institut de Recherche Pour le Développement (IRD) (2005). Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2020) extracted a subset of the original dataset and formatted it for use in this atlas.

Source data
Description
This dataset represents polygon coverage of coral reefs worldwide developed under the Millennium Coral Reef Mapping Project funded by NASA (grant #NAG5-10908) and IRD. The polygons are derived from the interpretation and classification of Landsat images. The Landsat images used are publicly available from http://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi/landsat.pl

Coral reefs are described hierarchically following five levels of geomorphologic and geographic information (L1, L2, L3, L4, L5). The most detailed scheme (L5) includes approximately 800 classes.

The product also includes the most accurate shoreline product to date, obtained after interpretation from Landsat images, and since 2005, after correction of the Shuttle Radar Terrain Mission water-body product.
