To show the communication infrastructure on Kosrae.
This dataset shows the communication infrastructure on Kosrae. The features shown include communication towers, wifi access points, and cell sites. The original data, so-called Digital Line Graphs (DLSs), were created by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for the 1:25,000-scale topographic maps (2001). The dataset was updated by Pacific Disaster Center (PDC) (2013) and by Island Research & Education Initiative (2019) using KML files created specifically for this Atlas by Joyminda Palokoa George (2019).

The dataset is included in the Digital Atlas of Micronesia, module Kosrae, by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) in collaboration with Water and Environmental Research Institute of the Western Pacific (WERI) at the University of Guam and funding from United States Geological Survey (USGS) under WRRI 104-B Program and FSM Department of Environment, Climate Change & Emergency Management (DECEM).

The completeness of the data is unknown but should be consistent with the level of information normally shown on U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000-scale topographic maps.
Attribute accuracy of DLGs is tested by manual comparison of the source with hard copy plots and/or symbolized display of the digital line graph on an interactive computer graphic system. Through inspection and queries, attempts were made to ensure completeness and consistency of attribute values.
Not known. However, based on the accuracy of other DLG data, communications and cellular towers could be up to 50 meters off. Wifi access points and cell sites are believed to be more accurate.
Visual comparison with WorldView-3 satellite imagery.
Added WIFI ACCESS POINTS (likely obtained from FSM Telecom office).
To incorporate data into PDC's DisasterAWARE decision-support system (2014).
1. Extracted features of interest from crit_fac_bldgs_pni_utmz57.shp; 2. Formatted attribute table and added fields (name, source, etc); 3. Added Cell Sites (by formatting and converting tabular data to shapefile).
To include in the Digital Atlas of Micronesia - module Kosrae
PDC dataset was provided to iREi in a geodatabase named PDC_FSM_GIS_NOAA_CSP.gdb.

A shapefile named crit_fac_bldgs_pni_utmz57.shp (derived from the DLGs) was obtained by the Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) as part of a data collection effort over many years and from a variety of sources. Many of the original sources are unknown due to incomplete or missing metadata, but mostly include NGOs and state and national government agencies in the FSM. This particular layer was most likely created by the Kosrae State Government. The dataset was obtained by iREi prior to 2012.
