The data was created by the Millennium Coral Reef Mapping Project by IMaRS-USF (Institute for Marine Remote Sensing - University of South Florida) and IRD (Institut de Recherche Pour le Developpement) (2005). This dataset represents polygon coverage of coral reefs worldwide developed under the Millennium Coral Reef Mapping Project funded by NASA (grant #NAG5-10908) and IRD. The polygons are derived from the interpretation and classification of Landsat images. The Landsat images used are publicly available from <http://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi/landsat.pl>
Coral reefs are described hierarchically following five levels of geomorphologic and geographic information (L1, L2, L3, L4, L5). The most detailed scheme (L5) includes approximately 800 classes.
The product also includes the most accurate shoreline product to date, obtained after interpretation from Landsat images, and since 2005, after correction of the Shuttle Radar Terrain Mission water-body product.
