Protected areas

Designated protected areas

This map shows the designated protected areas on and around Pohnpei. The dataset was created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2017) by merging information obtained from Pohnpei State Government, The Nature Conservancy, and KML files created by Alex Zuccarelli for Pohnpei Eco-Adventure Map Guide Series (2013). This GIS coverage may not be complete. Additional marine protected areas are referenced in legislation (e.g., https://www.fm/PohnpeiLeg/pending/PM_RD.doc) but may not have been delineated or formally implemented. Among sanctuaries that may exist in Pohnpei but are not yet included in these geospatial data are Sokehs Trochus Sanctuaries and Kepidau en Dauahk (Dawahk Pass) Marine Sanctuary.

Proposed protected areas

This map shows the Areas of Biological Significance (ABS) on Pohnpei. The dataset was created by The Nature Conservancy. A subset to show only Pohnpei was created by the Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi). The polygons in the data are intended to capture those areas that represent the wide range of biodiversity features in the marine and terrestrial areas of FSM. They capture expert knowledge from the FSM Blueprint project. They are used to guide conservation planning and projects in FSM, and ultimately to help establish conservation areas.

Areas of biodiversity significance

This map shows the proposed protected areas on Pohnpei. The dataset was created by The Nature Conservancy based on the results of the workshop convened in 2014 by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Conservation Society of Pohnpei (CSP), and Pohnpei State Governor’s Office to discuss the design of Pohnpei’s Protected Areas Network (PAN).

Species-level conservation targets

Species-level conservation targets

This map shows the species-level conservation targets on Pohnpei. The geospatial data were created by The Nature Conservancy based on the results of the workshop convened in 2014 by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Conservation Society of Pohnpei (CSP), and Pohnpei State Governor’s Office to discuss the design of Pohnpei’s Protected Areas Network (PAN). The original dataset could not be located by TNC so a new one was created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2017) by digitizing a hard copy map from the original workshop report.
