Protected areas

This map shows the designated protected areas on and around Kosrae. The dataset was created by the Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2019) by merging information obtained from The Nature Conservancy and Kosrae Island Resource Management Authority (KIRMA). This GIS coverage may not be complete. Additional marine protected areas are referenced in legislation (e.g., https://www.fm/KosraeLeg/pending/PM_RD.doc) but may not have been delineated or formally implemented.

Areas of biodiversity significance

This map shows the Areas of Biological Significance (ABS) on Kosrae. The dataset was created by The Nature Conservancy. A subset to show only Kosrae was created by the Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2019). The polygons in the data are intended to capture those areas that represent the wide range of biodiversity features in the marine and terrestrial areas of FSM. They capture expert knowledge from the FSM Blueprint project. They are used to guide conservation planning and projects in FSM, and ultimately to help establish conservation areas.
