Shoreline

This group of maps presents the layer depicting the shoreline and the land area of different islands collectively known as the Neighboring Islands of Yap. It actually contains two datasets: the shoreline itself and the base layer. Both were created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) as part of the “Geospatial Information Development and Application to Support Effective Decision Making in the Federated States of Micronesia” project funded through the NOAA Sea Grant Coastal Storms Program (2014). The layers were digitized using 2013-14 WorldView-2 satellite imagery from MAXAR, formerly Digital Globe, provided by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) - Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

Soil

Basic soil types

This group of maps presents the layer depicting basic soil classes for Fais and Ulithi, both part of the Neighboring Islands of Yap. The source of this layer is the Gridded Soil Survey Geographic (gSSURGO) Database for Federated States of Micronesia (2016) created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) - Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The original dataset was created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) - Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) (1983) as part of the soil survey of the Islands of Yap, Federated States of Micronesia at 1:10,000 scale. Soil map unit delineations were confirmed as accurate during a subsequent evaluation (1999). The data layer was created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2023) by extracting and formatting a subset of the Gridded Soil Survey Geographic (gSSURGO) Database for Federated States of Micronesia (2019) created by USDA-NRCS.
