Coral reefs

Reef location

Extent of coral reefs

This group of maps shows the extent of coral reefs that form atolls and islands collectively known as the Neighboring Islands of Yap. The dataset was created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) as part of the “Geospatial Information Development and Application to Support Effective Decision Making in the Federated States of Micronesia” project funded through the NOAA Sea Grant Coastal Storms Program (2014). The layers were digitized using 2013-14 WorldView-2 satellite imagery from MAXAR, formerly Digital Globe, provided by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) - Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Note that this layer is a subset of the physical geography feature class from the base layer (see Shoreline).

Reef classification

Reef geomorphology

This group of maps classifies the reefs of the Neighboring Islands of Yap by their geomorphology. The dataset used here is the same as the one used for the reef habitat maps. It was created by the Allen Coral Atlas Partnership and Vulcan, Inc. (2020) available from www.allencoralatlas. Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2023) extracted a subset of the original dataset and formatted it for use in this atlas.

Reef habitat types

This group of maps classifies the reefs of the Outer Islands of Yap by the predominant type of benthic habitat. The dataset used here is the same as the one used for the reef habitat maps. It was created by the Allen Coral Atlas Partnership and Vulcan, Inc. (2020) available from www.allencoralatlas. Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2019) extracted a subset of the original dataset and formatted it for use in this atlas.

Ocean floor

Lagoon circulation

Reef passes

This map shows the locations of principal reef passes in the Neighboring Islands of Yap. These points are places in the atoll reefs of Neighboring Islands of Yap, where lagoons connect with the surrounding open ocean. This dataset was derived by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2023) by visually identifying reef passes on satellite imagery accessed though the ImageServer Service (2023) provided by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) - Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

Bathymetry

Bathymetry

This map shows the bathymetry (depth to seafloor) in Yap State. The source is the GEBCO_2022 Grid by the GEBCO Compilation Group. Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2023) extracted a subset of the original dataset and formatted it for use in this atlas.
