Prominent prehistoric sites

This map shows some of the prominent prehistoric sites on the islands in Chuuk Lagoon. The data layer was created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2020) by researching and combining location data from Chuuk State Historic Preservation Office, Geoview, Chuuk Visitors Bureau, U.S. National Park Service, Rainbird (1993), and years of research (2001-2008) by William Jeffery (University of Guam) and fieldwork implemented with Arimichy Rudolph and Anerit Mailo of Chuuk State Historic Preservation Office (Chuuk SHPO), in collaboration with many people in Chuuk, including Gradvin Aisek, Tong Misa, and the other chiefs of Tonoas, informant and translator Joshua Suka, landowners and residents of Tonoas and Weno, and the U.S. National Park Service / Historic Preservation Fund.

This map shows some of the key historic sites and remains from the German, Japanese, and Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands periods of Chuuk's history. The features shown are remains of government, civilian, and mixed-used sites and exclude military installation and World War II remnants. The data layer was created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2020) by compiling location information from a number of sources, including Geoview and the years of research (2001-2008) by William Jeffery (University of Guam) and fieldwork implemented with Arimichy Rudolph and Anerit Mailo of Chuuk State Historic Preservation Office (Chuuk SHPO), in collaboration with many people in Chuuk, including Gradvin Aisek, Tong Misa, and the other chiefs of Tonoas, informant and translator Joshua Suka, landowners and residents of Tonoas and Weno, and the U.S. National Park Service / Historic Preservation Fund.

Japanese military installations

This map shows the locations of a significant part of Japanese military and World War II legacy scattered around the islands of Chuuk Lagoon. The features shown are remains of military bases, command centers, runways, storage areas, artillery sites, bunkers, port facilities, seaplane sites, and other war paraphernalia located on land, as opposed to sunken ships and other underwater features. The data layer was created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2020) by compiling location information from a number of sources, including Geoview and years of research (2001-2008) by William Jeffery (University of Guam) and fieldwork implemented with Arimichy Rudolph and Anerit Mailo of Chuuk State Historic Preservation Office (Chuuk SHPO), in collaboration with many people in Chuuk, including Gradvin Aisek, Tong Misa, and the other chiefs of Tonoas, informant and translator Joshua Suka, landowners and residents of Tonoas and Weno, and the U.S. National Park Service / Historic Preservation Fund.

Sunken ships and planes

This map shows the locations of sunken ships, planes, and war debris in Chuuk Lagoon. The data layer was created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2020) from location data reported by Jeffery (2007), War graves, munition dumps and pleasure grounds: A post-colonial perspective of Chuuk Lagoon’s submerged World War II sites; as well as Jeffery (2012), The future of Chuuk Lagoon's submerged WW II sites. All known features sunken inside Chuuk Lagoon in WW2 are included, except for the following: ships that were sunk but later re-floated, ships that sunk outside Chuuk Lagoon, and ships that were damaged but did not sink

This map shows the locations of pre-historic and historic places that are located in Chuuk Lagoon and formally inscribed into the U.S. National Park Service's Register of Historic Places. One of the sites is also recognized as U.S. National Historic Landmark. The data layer was created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2020) based on locations sourced from Geoview and the U.S. National Park Service.

Vessels aground

Wrecked and abandoned vessels [post-World War II]

This map shows the locations of wrecked and abandoned vessels in Chuuk Lagoon, especially ships that ran aground on the barrier reef and patch reefs. The data layer was created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2020) using a combination of field-collected information and observations using Google Maps and imagery. It should be noted that this layer is an incipient version that currently contains only one data point, but is slated for expansion in the near future as fieldwork opportunities permit.

This map shows tourism points of interest, as considered and promoted by Chuuk Visitors Bureau. Sites include prominent hotels and dive shops, beaches and picnic sites, well known culturally-significant sites, World War II remains, and other locations of interest to visitors to Chuuk. The data layer was created by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2020) in consultation with Douglas Marar (Chuuk Visitors Bureau) and using information provided in KML form by Nely Mori Ruben (Chuuk Visitor's Bureau).
